The Braves came out of their mini-break with an awful game, losing to the Nationals 9-2 Tuesday night in Atlanta. Jair Jurrjens had another terrible start, going 6 innings and allowing 8 hits, 6 runs, 2 BB, and 3 Ks. He gave up 3 (!) home runs. He is now 13-6 with a 2.96 ERA. He says there is nothing wrong with his knee. Whatever the reason, he is pitching really poorly right now.
Cristhian Martinez also had a bad outing. Coming on to pitch the 7th, he gave up 3 hits, including a homer, and allowed 3 runs. Jason Heyward(38 RBIs) went 1-2 and knocked in our 2 runs. Alex Gonzalez hit his 20th double.
News: The Braves re-acquired Matt Diaz! They acquired the outfielder from Pittsburgh for a player to be named later. Diaz was an Atlanta fan favorite and will help as a right handed bat off the bench. Diaz was hitting .259 with 56 hits in 216 at-bats for the Pirates. He has 19 RBIs and 12 doubles. He is hitting .295 vs lefties which is primarily how he will be used for Atlanta. He should be available tonight.
Standings: The Braves are 7 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the NL East. We are the wild card leader over the Giants and Cardinals by 8 1/2 games.
Hanson Update: Tommy Hanson met with Dr. James Andrews on Monday and received pretty good news. Andrews told him that he is just experiencing normal wear and tear on his shoulder and that he is clear to begin rehab.
Tonight’s Game: Nationals LH John Lannan vs LH Derek Lowe at 7:10 on Peachtree TV. Everyone else beats the Nats, why can’t we?
