Braves Defeat Giants in the Ninth

The Braves pulled off a dramatic come from behind win tonight, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Giants, 5-4.

The Braves took an early lead in this one. In the 1st, Brian McCann hit a solo homer(19 HR, 56 RBIs) to deep right to make it 1-0. In the 2nd, Freddie Freeman singled to lead off. After Jason Heyward flew out, Alex Gonzalez stroked a ball to 3rd that Fontenot made a good play to stop but he couldn’t throw Gonzalez out. Jose Constanza(9 RBIs) then singled to score Freeman to make it 2-0.

The Giants came back with 2 unearned runs in the 4th. Huff smacked a line drive to center that Michael Bourn came in on then he had to jump and it deflected off his glove for a crucial error. Tim Hudson then walked Schierholtz and hit Belt with a pitch to load the bases. Cabrera and Whiteside each hit sac flies to tie the game at 2-2.

In the 6th, Hudson allowed a lead off solo home run to Nate Schierholtz making it 3-2. In the 8th, he allowed another lead off homer, this time to Fontenot making it 4-2. Fontenot had entered the game in the bottom of the first after Pablo Sandoval could not continue after fouling a ball off of his foot in the top of the first. Hudson pitched a good game going 8 innings, allowing 5 hits, 4 runs (2 earned), 1 BB, 2 Ks, and 2 HBP. He seemed to struggle a little with his location and getting behind hitters.

In the Braves ninth, my man Jose Constanza led off with a chopper to Cabrera at short that Constanza beat out for a hit off of Giants closer Brian Wilson. Pinch hitter Eric Hinske drew a walk. Bourn put down a sac bunt to move runners to 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Martin Prado(45 RBIs) singled past third to score Constanza and put runners at first and third. McCann drew a 4 pitch walk from Wilson. Dan Uggla struck out. Freeman then stepped up and hit a 2 out, 3-2 pitch up the middle knocking in 2 runs (60 RBIs) and sending 23,498 fans home happy.

The Giants Madison Bumgarner pitched a good game going 7 innings allowing only 2 runs on 8 hits. Wilson was the loser (6-4). Cristhian Martinez pitched a 1,2,3 ninth for the Braves to pick up the win (1-2). The Braves lead the league with 21 victories in their final at bat.

Standings: The Braves are 8 1/2 games behind the Phillies. We are the wild card leader over the Giants by 5 games and over the Cardinals by 6 games.

Tomorrow’s Game: RH Randall Delgado(0-1, 6.75 ERA) vs Giants LH Jonathan Sanchez at 7:10 on Peachtree TV.  (Back up catcher J.C. Boscan will go back to AAA Gwinnett to make room for call up Delgado. Delgado is making a spot start for Tommy Hanson who is on the 15 day DL). Go Braves!
