The Braves defeated the Mets 6-5 Sunday afternoon in New York to take two wins out of the three game series. Mike Minor was the starter, taking Jair Jurrjens’ spot in the rotation, and he pitched okay. He finished with 5.2 innings,7 hits, 4 runs, 2 BB, and 5 Ks. Through 5 he had only given up 2 runs. In the 6th, he got 2 outs then walked a man and gave up a single that Constanza misplayed putting runners at second and third. Then O’Flaherty came on and allowed Minor’s two runners to score (on two dinky infield hits).
The Braves got an early home run from Jason Heyward (12 HR, 30 RBIs). With the score tied 2-2 in the fifth, Alex Gonzalez hit a 2 run homer (9 HR, 37 RBI) to make it 4-2. Jose Constanza followed that with a solo home run (1HR, 5 RBIs) to make it 5-2. Then the Mets scored their two in the sixth and scored another run off of O’Flaherty in the 7th on another dinky single that Prado got caught in no man’s land on in left, turning it into a double and allowing a run to score making it 5-5.
In the ninth, the Braves got some payback with some dinky hits of their own. Alex Gonzalez led off with a pop up to the outfield that fell in for a hit. Constanza bunted him to second. Eric Hinske drew a walk. Chipper(49 RBIs) came up and hit a ground ball just past the second baseman, scoring Gonzalez and putting the Braves up 6-5.
Craig Kimbrel came on in the ninth to earn his 34th save after Jonny Venters pitched a scoreless 8th. Dan Uggla was able to extend his hitting streak to 28 games, stroking a single in his final at bat in the 8th. Freddie Freeman’s hitting streak was ended at 20 games as he went 0-4. Our two AAA call-ups, Constanza and J.C. Boscan (catcher) each had 2 hits. Constanza has great speed too, picking up a stolen base.
Tonight’s Game: RH Derek Lowe vs Marlins LH Brad Hand at 7:10 on SportSouth. Derek is 6-10 with 4.86 ERA and has really struggled lately. Hopefully he can turn it around and we can also turn around how poorly we hit against lefties.
Injury update: Jair Jurrjens is on the 15 day DL with a balky left knee. He said it started to bother him right after the all-star break and he has pitched terribly since then. I’m just waiting for Tommy Hanson to say that his shoulder is bothering him again because he has been awful since the break.
