Braves take opener over Rockies

The Braves took an early lead and then held on to win Monday night against the Rockies in Colorado, 7-4.

Freddie Freeman continued to torch Colorado, going 3-5 with a homer and 3 RBIs, scoring 2 runs. He now has 14 HR and 50 RBIs. In a spot start in left, Eric Hinske went 2-3 with a double and a massive 2nd deck homer(9th). He also walked and scored 2 runs. McCann went 2-5.

Derek Lowe went 6.1 innings allowing 4 runs, 8 hits, 2 BB, and 2 Ks. That brings his record to 6-7 and his ERA to 4.37. He actually pitched really well but the Rockies picked up several pop ups that fell in and little flare singles that killed him.

Craig Kimbrel came on in the ninth and struck out the side to pick up his 29th save.

Injury update: Jason Heyward sat this game out after his left foot was hit by a pitch on Sunday. He has a contusion; he’ll probably be back in the lineup tonight.

Rumor Mill: It’s out there that Detroit is interested in Derek Lowe. They would have to pick up most of the $20 million Lowe is owed for the Braves to listen. Braves are looking to free up some money so they can pursue a right-handed bat and some help for their over worked bullpen.

The Phillies are showing interest in Royals’ Jeff Francouer. The Royals may be more willing to part with Melky Cabrera than Francouer.  The Pirates may try to make a deal to acquire Carlos Beltran from the Mets.

Standings: The Braves are 57-39 and are 2 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the NL East. We are the Wild Card leader by 5 games over Arizona, by 6 1/2 games over Milwaukee & St. Louis, and by 9 games over Washington.

Chipper update: Chipper took some grounders and live batting practice this past Friday at AAA Gwinnett. He plans to DH for single A Rome this Friday and Saturday. Depending on how his knee reacts, he’s still hoping to be back for Monday’s home series opener vs. Pittsburgh.

Tonight’s Game: RH Brandon Beachy vs Rockies RH Ubaldo Jimenez at 8:40 on Peachtree TV
