The Braves placed Chipper Jones on the 15 day DL today and called up infielder Brandon Hicks from AAA Gwinnett. Chipper has decided to undergo arthroscopic surgery on the torn meniscus in his right knee rather than trying to continue to play through the pain. I’m guessing that it will be 4-6 weeks recovery time. It makes sense to take advantage of the All-Star break and get it taken care of so that Chipper will be healthy when we need him for the stretch run in September. Let the Cubs’ Aramis Ramirez go to the All-Star game in Chipper’s place.
Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees also has a tear in his knee cartilage. It will be interesting to see if he plays with it or opts for surgery. Speaking of the Yankees, congratulations to Derek Jeter on picking up his 3000th hit today. He hit a single off of Tampa Bay’s David Price for 2999 and then hit a game tying homer in the third for number 3000. He has a flair for the dramatic. I hate the Yankees but I’ve always liked the way Jeter plays and conducts himself. He is a great ambassador for the Yankees and baseball in general.
