Braves Lose Opener to Phillies

The Braves lost a tough, well played game to the Phillies Friday night, 3-2 on a 10th inning home run that Raul Ibanez struck just as the clock struck midnight.

The Braves took an early lead in the second on Roy Halliday. Chipper led off with a single to right and went to second on a passed ball by Ruiz. Freddie Freeman hit an RBI single to center(his 43rd RBI). The lead was short lived, however. In the Phillies’ second, Ibanez led off with a single. Brandon Beachy balked him to second; Carlos Ruiz followed with a single to put runners at 1st and 3rd. After Brown struck out, Valdez hit a sac fly to right to tie the score at 1-1.

In the Braves’ 4th, Brian McCann led off with a single to right. Chipper followed with a double to right center putting runners at 2nd and 3rd. After Freeman struck out, Uggla hit a grounder to third and McCann broke for home. 3rd baseman Valdez hesitated, then decided late to go to first. Uggla was safe and McCann scored, making it 2-1. That was Uggla’s 33rd RBI.

In the bottom of the 4th, Ruiz hit a 1 out homer off of a Beachy fastball to make the score 2-2. Beachy was done after 6 innings, Halliday after 7. Halliday allowed a 2 out triple to McClouth in the 7th but Nate was stranded there after PH Eric Hinske flew out to left. In the bottom of the 6th, the Phillies had 2 on with 1 out when Freeman made a nice over the shoulder catch of a Valdez pop, then Beachy struck out Halliday.

O’Flaherty, Venters, Linebrink, and Sherrill held the line for the 7th, 8th, and 9th. For the Phillies–Stutes, Bastardo, and Juan Perez pitched a scoreless 8th, 9th, and 10th. In the bottom of the 10th, Scott Proctor (yuck) came in for the Braves. Ryan Howard hit what looked like a gapper, but Jordan Schafer laid out and made a great catch between left and center. Then Ibanez cranked a 2-0 “hit me” fastball into the right field seats to end Proctor’s and the Braves’ night.

Beachy went 6 innings, with 2 runs, 8 hits, 0 BB, and 6 Ks on 83 pitches. The Braves had 6 hits and struck out 11 times. On this night, the Phillies’ bullpen out dueled ours. Perez struck out the side in the 10th. Venters threw 24 pitches so he may not pitch tomorrow.

Standings: The Braves fall back to 3 1/2 behind Philadelphia.

Saturday’s Game: RH Tommy Hanson vs LH Cliff Lee at 4:10 on Fox. We need a strong game from everyone tomorrow–Go Braves!
