Braves blow out Rockies

The Braves jumped on the Rockies early Wednesday night and cruised to a 9-1 victory. Jair Jurrjens pitched 6 strong innings giving up 1 run, 5 hits, 2 walks, and 2 Ks. Jurrjens is now 12-3 with a 1.87 ERA.

Schafer led off the Braves’ first with a stand up triple to right center. Alex Gonzalez knocked him in with a RBI single to right. After 2 outs, Hinske hit a RBI single to right making the score 3-0. Hinske was starting in right field to give Jason Heyward the night off.

In the bottom of the 3rd, McCann led off with a single that Chipper followed with a 2 run homer to left to make the score 5-0.

In the Rockies’ 5th, Stewart doubled then Pagnozzi knocked him in with a RBI single to make the score 5-1. Jurrjens struggled a little in the 5th and 6th but was able to pitch himself out of trouble.

In the Braves’ 6th, Hinske hit a single up the middle. Then Uggla hit a hard single past short. That was it for Rockies’ starter Aaron Cook. They brought in Rex Brothers who walked McClouth. Jason Heyward pinch hit for Jair and hit into a double play, scoring Hinske. Then Jordan Schafer hit an RBI single up the middle to make it 7-1. Shafer finished 4-5 with a triple, RBI, run scored, and a stolen base.

In the bottom of the 8th, Wilkin Ramirez pinch hit for George Sherrill and hit a single up the middle off of Betancourt. Dan Uggla followed that with a 2 run homer (his 14th) to complete the scoring at 9-1. The Braves had 14 hits.

Scott Linebrink, George Sherrill, and Scott Proctor pitched the final 3 innings of shut out ball.

Standings: The Phillies finally lost a game so the Braves picked up a game and are now 3 games behind.

The Braves go for a four game sweep of the Rockies Thursday afternoon at 1:00 on WPCH Peachtree TV. Go Tim Hudson–Go Braves!
