The Braves’ Tommy Hanson came back from the DL last night and picked up his 9th win as the Braves beat the Mariners 5-4. His first pitch of the night was deposited by Ichiro into the right field bleachers putting us in a quick 1-0 hole. Later, in the 4th inning, Hanson gave up another homer (to Cust) which made the score 3-0. After that Hanson settled in and looked tough.
On this night, our offense didn’t sleepwalk through the game. Uggla (!) started the scoring by picking up his 12th homer. In the 7th, after 3 walks by Seattle pitching, Schafer came through with a RBI single. Later that inning, McCann picked up a bases loaded 2 out seeing eye 2 RBI single that put the Braves up 5-3. Sherrill gave up a run but once again Kimbrel came on in the 9th and got the save (his 22nd).
Hanson went 6, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks and 8 Ks on 97 pitches. His record is 9-4 and he is among the league leaders with an ERA of 2.62. McCann remained sizzling hot with 4 singles to bring his average to .317 which puts him 5th in the NL.
The Braves are now 11 games over .500, 4 1/2 games behind the Phillies and 1 1/2 games ahead of the D-Backs for the wildcard. They play the finale vs Seattle today at 3:40 on Sportsouth going for the sweep. Derek Lowe will be facing King Felix (Hernandez). Lowe is 3-6 and hasn’t won since May 6. We really need to get him going. Go Braves!
