Braves lose San Diego Finale

The Braves lost a tough one Sunday to the Padres 4-1. We once again wasted a good starter performance, this time it was Tim Hudson. Hudson really wasn’t at his best but he really hung in there, pitched tough and went 6 innings of shutout ball. He pitched around 6 hits and 3 walks while getting 8 Ks to bring his ERA to 3.51. The Braves again did nothing on offense but still had a good chance to win this game. In the 8th, Schafer hit a double to knock in Hinske to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. The Braves then called on Venters in the bottom of the 8th and he had his first really bad outing. It started with a leadoff walk (kiss of death for a reliever) then he misplayed a bunt. He got to the ball in plenty of time but he piddle putzed around winding up to throw to first allowing the runner to reach first safely. Should have been one out with man at second.Later in the inning with the bases loaded and 2 outs, Venters deflected a grounder which allowed the tying run to score. I think if he had let the ball go, Gonzalez would have made the play for the final out of the inning and the Padres would not have scored. 2 hits later and the score was 4-1, ballgame. Oh well, Venters was due to eventually have a bad game. If we would get a few more hits and runs our pitchers wouldn’t have to be perfect.
