Braves Complete Sweep of Mariners

The Braves swept Seattle today behind 6 strong innings from starter Derek Lowe and a 10 hit attack(all singles) from their offense for a 5-3 victory. The Braves’ scoring started in the 4th after Freeman hit a 2 out single, Uggla followed with an infield single then Brooks Conrad (starting at third for Chipper) hit a RBI single up the middle. In the 5th, McClouth led off with a walk, advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch by Felix Hernandez, went to 3rd on Gonzalez’ fly out to right, then scored on another wild pitch during Schafer’s at bat. Schafer did a good job not letting that ball hit him. He then singled up the middle and stole 2nd. Heyward walked. After McCann grounded out, Freeman hit a 2 out 2 RBI single to center making the score 4-0.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Mariners picked up a run on three singles off of Lowe. Freeman made a good play on a hard hit grounder by Kennedy for the third out with 2 on. The Braves scored their final run in the 7th. Gonzalez led off with a single to left. Heyward singled to center moving Alex to third, then McCann singled him home making the score 5-1. In the bottom of the 8th, Venters came on and allowed a lead off single to Ryan and then Ackley hit a 2 out 2 run homer to complete the scoring. That was the first homerun Venters has allowed all year.

Lowe picked up his 4th win going 6 innings giving up 1 run, 4 hits, 3 walks with 5 Ks(97 pitches).  O’Flaherty pitched a scoreless 7th with 2 strikeouts. Kimbrel came on in the 9th and got 2 more strikeouts and another save. On offense, Conrad went 2-4 with an RBI, Freeman went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, and McCann went 1-5 with a RBI.

Negatives: Jonny Venters had another so-so outing. I hope he’s not wearing out on us. Jordan Schafer and Nate McClouth almost collided in the outfield twice, with Schafer making the catch both times. They need to work on their communication.

Off day tomorrow then the Braves come home for 3 against Baltimore then 4 against Colorado. The Orioles series is the last of interleague play for the year.
